Maomao sure has made that storage shed into her own space. Looked well organized, quite cozy, and nice.

Spooky ghost stories on a hot day, perfect way to get the chills...But the moment they showed the large pot with burning charcoal indoors, I instantly knew that was a bad idea because of odorless carbon monoxide poisoning, the infamous silent killer. Sure enough, that was a realization by the end.

First story told about the drowning lady-in-waiting was likely about what happened in an earlier season when Maomao came across her drowned corpse, and the rumor subsequently traveled like a game of telephone until it turned into a ghost story.

The next one told about fearing going into the forbidden forest or else you'll get cursed, reminds me a lot of myths of fables, superstitions, and even some religions, where the purpose is to tell a cautionary tale in the form of easy to understand storytelling, often about dangerous areas or natural disasters (floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, caves where people have disappeared after entering...so on and so forth). It's for this reason that I no longer dismiss the wisdom of old folks telling similar stories (like; "Don't stay out too late at night or the boogeyman will get ya!" i.e. human traffickers kidnapping children). I used to immediately dismiss these kinds of tales as a young child when taken at face value because even I could tell it was total BS at that age...but it's this other POV that made me quickly switch my entire mindset and worldview towards stories in general, especially nowadays as an adult, making me ask "What is this story trying to convey?". When the other villagers ostracized the boy and his mother for going into the forest, probably not knowing why the forest was forbidden in the first place, that reminded me of the "5 monkey experiment" I highly recommend giving that a read, because the experiment was, funny enough, a made-up yet plausible cautionary tale in of itself, attempting to convey a visual message, although the opposite message of which that was shown in this episode with the poisonous mushrooms ghost story.

Shisui's story of a foreign monk traveling to a distant land, then cuts to showing people wearing Japanese-style clothes...Brilliant. I often forget that traveling long distances historically, even to Japan and beyond, was quite common for religious reasons in order to spread the teachings of Buddhism (as well as other reasons like scholars and merchants of course). The historical accuracy of the world building of this series is really good, despite it being fictional where multiple different dynasties were drawn inspiration from, together with some original ideas to create this setting.

Once that last 12th story was told, it was super freaky. Was she a real ghost after all? Trying to kill the other 11 young girls there so that they would also be "unable to ever leave alive" like she was from her own story...and thus becoming the 13th ghost story... Or maybe like Maomao suggested as a possibility, someone in a similar circumstance who knew the organizer carrying on her own twisted way of instilling some "real" fear for her own enjoyment. The scenery with the flowing flower pedals was also quite the visual metaphor. Guess we'll never know. I don't blame Yinghua for being scared. Speaking of Yinghua, I never noticed this before, but I just realized that she wears accessories like earrings resembling cherry blossoms, because that was her namesake...neat.

Next week, will be one one NOT to miss! A huge part point for the series that changes everything we knew, if you're an anime-only watcher at least. I'm looking forward to seeing Maomao wearing another pretty outfit again from that preview. 🐸

I liked this episode a lot. It was a nice change of pace and I always enjoy seeing interactions between groups of characters that aren't usually all together, like Maomao, Yinghua and Shisui.

Also interesting that Maomao noticed Shisui looked familiar from a certain angle. Especially in the eyes, I'd imagine? I have my theory and I'm getting more confident in it with each episode. It's killing me not reading ahead. Lol That said, I'm always happy to see more of Shisui. She's too cute.

And was it just me or did the organizer for the ghost story session have an appearance reminiscent of Suirei? It also definitely seemed like they were hinting ay ghosts being real in-universe in this ep, but that's probably misdirection knowing this series. Especially since there's never been any indication of supernatural goings on before.

I can't wait for next week!

Good overall. Shisui's story was a bit more intense than what I would've expected from this show. Thought it was kinda cool how they turned the subtitles red during the "scary" lines, they didn't need to add that.

Anime-only watcher here, but that preview got me really hyped for next week. Looks like some major character stuff is gonna go down.

Great kaidan episode. I just have two questions. Does the title now canonically have a paranormal element? And do the Chinese actually have a similar tradition of telling kaidan stories? Or is this just an easter egg by the author?

@MegamiRem Considering how much this episode brought Maomao and Yinghua together, albeit comedically, I wonder if the writer intended to ship them as a joke pairing? I mean, there were at least two "gay out of context" gags in this episode.

@senku_13 This episode references the Japanese tradition of telling scary stories, where people gather together with candles and extinguish them after telling individual scary stories. While this helps cool down during the summer (a time for scary stories and content in Japan), the whole experience is scary in itself. It is believed that when all the candles are extinguished and all the stories are told, the participants approach the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead. That's why at the end the lights go out and all the participants expect paranormal things. Of course, fictional depictions of this tradition often include an "it was all part of the story" ending, where the storytellers die or getting isekai-ed in ghost world.

Anyway, google Hyaku Monogatari. True, in the original there should be 100 candles, but where will you find so many people for scary stories these days?

@ropiel This is called the hyaku monogatari tradition, part of the larger kaidan culture. If you're interested, you can look it up online. There's even a standalone arthouse movie Kwaidan featuring a couple of these stories that looks pretty cool.

Nah litteral ghost?
This concubine was probably the one who got pregnant with daughter and forcefully kept in Rear Palace. Fked up things aside she couldn't be a ghost there's someone else at play here ig. This episode is named Bakemonogatari not the anime.

- Suirei murdering had become a legend now
- Villagers deserved a taste of poisonous mushroom.
- Shisui story was only remotely scary one.
- Maomao speaking about how grave robbers created medicine from livers of corps. On par.

Nearly became 13th ghost story.
Spine chilling night became hot and steamy one.
Yuingha got some time to "shine".

Those three twins Hakuu, Kokuu, Seiku kinda cute names. Hope they don't have any I'll intentions.

@RobertBobert Well, AFAIK in the manga the existence of the "ghost" was left much more vague... Idk abt the LN tho, haven't read as far yet. So technically yes, but it doesn't rly matter, the rest of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto are much more grounded in reality.

Abt Chinese culture, this is not technically based on any earth RL culture. Or to be more precise, it is a combination of Chinese and Japanese culture. Example, the names Maomao, Lishu, Luomen, and Loulan are Chinese-based. However, the names Hakuu, Gyokuyou, Suirei, Shishou, and Jinshi are Japanese-based instead. It doesn't borrow from a single culture specifically.

@uncleqrow Well, I suspected that the Chinese Empire in that title was somewhere in an alternate universe, but given the old tradition of giving Japanese names to Chinese and vice versa, I thought it was just a formality.

Now I want to go into a forest in the middle of the night to see those mushrooms. And hopefully don't die or be killed looking for it.

Shisui is nice, bring snacks and a good story.

Cut in the end just to remember that Jinshi is somewhere, and is part of the series.
@BlichoBoy Maomao calls them something different but she's talking about Omphalotus nidiformis, Ghost mushrooms.

Enjoyable episode, but it definitely felt more like a filler. It's interesting to see Maomao let her guard down like that. Normally, she would've noticed the danger of a fire in an enclosed space with zero ventilation immediately.

Also, I'm guessing her remark about Shisui "looking familiar in this light" is an implication to Loulan? I can't think of any other character we've seen so far that actually looks like Shisui other than Loulan. Although, they have completely opposite personalities.

Surely someone like Maomao wouldn't believe in ghosts. There was a mysterious woman who tried to kill herself and 11 other in that room! That needs to be investigated, but I guess this was just a "random filler" episode so it will be forgotten.

The most intriguing part this episode was Maomao's comment on Shisui. Now that I think about it, she looks like one of the newest consorts who's quiet all the time, Loulan. Maybe they're related? Funny but I wouldn't have been suspicious of her if Maomao didn't bring it up. To this moment I thought she was just another supporting character like Xiaolan, but I guess there's more to it.

Anyways, next episode looks intriguing.

A question for light novel readers (no spoilers, no worries)

I'm gonna buy the light novel but not sure if anime is following the novel completely. Should I buy from volume 1? Or, if it is ok to skip, which volume/chapter is anime as of this episode? I binge watched the whole thing and dying to know what will happen next.

This episode felt very fillerish. It is probably the weakest episode in the series 2 season run. It was a decent episode, but it just feels lacking from what I am used to with Apothecary Diaries. I look forward to them getting back on track with next week's episode.

That monk's aura is absolutely immaculate, damn. Anyway, I'm confused. I thought there was no supernatural aspect to this anime? Although I guess here it's just left up to the viewer's imagination intentionally with the implication that there is a real concrete non-supernatural explanation to what happened.

Gyokuyou's newest ladies-in-waiting, Haku, Koku and Seku, they're sisters alright that are difficult to tell apart, but at least the Jade Pavilion has more manpower to manage the new concubine's soon-to-arrive newborn. And out of benevolence, Yinghua secretly inviting her to the north end of the rear palace to be told ghost stories...or more like rumours swirling in the rear palace from people gossiping in secret.

The ghost stories somewhat vary in entertainment, though Shisui's story had that eerie feeling of horror. And when it came time for Maomao to tell her own story, it grew so dark to the point that Yinghua had to stop her lol, only to fumble on her own. The 13th story, told from the organizer foretelling of the late Emperor (something which is already known in prior episodes), it's her sense of smell which almost freezes her senses saving the rest of the servants alongside in the small house. What came out of it is the assessment of moonlight mushrooms in the "forbidden forest" which attributed to a tale of revenge, that which the story has its own twist of depictions.

Well, as it turns out, the late court lady's affiliation to the late emperor is not one to gloss over, spending her fun talking about ghost stories even during his reign. Maomao and Yinghua should be lucky they didn't turn into a horror story.
