To be transparent, this is the first I'm hearing about the issue, so I might be missing some details here, but here's my take: anyone who says your content supported or took advantage of stereotypes either aren't paying attention or are intentionally trying to cause drama for clout. I simply can't see it any other way. I've always found your posts very well-intentioned and, as a white person, have learned a lot and have been pushed to reflect on my own perceptions. I don't think there's anything wrong with inviting someone from outside of your culture to share parts of it with you, when its done for the sake of celebration and education. As for whatever Young Casper said or did, I can't speak to that. Tried doing some research before posting, but couldn't find anything. It's good that you took time to reflect and didn't respond while emotions were still fresh and raw. Much love to you from the States!

    • @tenshimoon
      @tenshimoon Месяц назад +49

Another white person here and same, this is the first time I'm hearing about this. I've never even seen comments speaking against Casper or his involvement, I've mostly only seen supportive comments (and on the rare occasion, the few racist PoS comments that come from right wingers looking to be trolls).
Didn't know there were people making such a huge deal out of him being involved in these skits. When it comes to culture and race issues, I always take my cues from the people of that culture/race - if they're not offended and don't see a problem with it, then I'm not gonna worry about it either. Better to save my energy and labour for real problems like blatant racism and cultural issues that people of other cultures genuinely feel harmed by. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Edit: but on the other hand I haven't seen Casper's own individual content, bc firstly I wasn't aware he started posting his own stuff, and secondly I'm fairly selective about the content creators I follow. I only really follow if their content genuinely interests me or makes me laugh, and if it's generally more positive than negative (or if it's social issues commentary content, then if it speaks on issues I'm interested in). So I can't speak on Casper's content. But I prefer to take my cue from Eagle on that whole situation bc 1 he's more deeply involved with it, and 2 if he doesn't see anything wrong with it, then I take it as more of an individual opinion type of situation on Casper's content.

Your response is lovely, but I really think those criticizing you are doing it for attention. I'm Jewish, and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Seinfeld" are a lot about making fun of Jewish stereotypes, for example. To me, it's how you humanize yourself as the "other" - make people laugh, show that the stereotypes are silly and you too have humor about them. Your friendship with Casper is amazing, and I don't think you should change a thing. Keep bringing joy AND educating us non-indigenously indigenous!

One, I appreciate your videos. I don't know the full controversy with Young Casper, but his character (right? he has a video persona regardless of his regular everyday off camera person) -- I feel like he represents me: a white person living in a place without many Native people but who wants to support, wants to be an ally, fully acknowledges the travesty of my ancestors, but out of naivete, lack of knowledge, we end up being awkward and accidentally inappropriate -- and pretty much usually an outsider -- which I respect that I'm viewing and learning about a community I'm not part of. But for all Young Casper's caricature, I feel hope that I can also learn in a respectful way.

I agree with@@glassoniongirl on this. I had a quick look at Casper's vids and I think I see why there may have been a negative reaction. As one who has worked professionally in comedy, and disastrously attempted stand-up, my advice is if you play cross-culturally (esp if you're white, like me) then always be the butt of your own jokes and, if you can, let the audience do the punchline. Casper is naturally funny and geeky (sorry, Casper! Meant as a compliment!) but is taking the first steps and in a difficult area, so pratfalls are inevitable. Keep going Casper! Learn and adapt. Personally I think the 'geeky white sidekick of deadly indigenous guy' has mileage and overturns the run of the mill Hollywood stereotypes. There's a lot of room for exploration here.

    • @sarahjones3754

@@desperatefortuneproduction3296 Yeah, and I think people are missing nuance here, or maybe catching nuance isn't in their comedy vocabulary yet. I mean, just "Young Casper" ... maybe it's the guy's real name, but what a great moniker for his character, calling to mind "Casper the Friendly Ghost" ... just so many things there to enjoy all the resonances.

I don't know what Young Casper has done or said to upset certain people who view your videos about Native American stereotype, but so far what I have seen I understood as humor. I am native female working in the construction field, we all use humor to get us through the long hard day. Working outdoors in the freezing rain, wind and snow during the winters and the long hot days in the summer takes a toll on our bodies and our minds. Laughing about what we did, what happened with our lives, simply just laughing at ourselves and getting it out of our systems creates a better working environment and a feeling of working together and looking out for one another's safety and well being. Not everyone is offended by what you and your friend Casper post on RUclips, I understand it because we go through those same stereotype from people all across the State who have never interacted with Native American people before. Yes you are correct, we all have families outside of our work. Laughter helps us cope with whatever may be happening in our family life, we get through those hard times by accepting what happened and dealing with it the best way we can. The world will not come to a halt because of what happens within our lives, life goes on so we have to keep on living the best way possible and help one another as much as we can, however we can. And let me tell you, Eagle Blackbird and Young Casper have been there for me providing laughter and uplifting my spirits when I feel so down and out. As for certain individuals upset about your content of giving Spirit Names, don't worry about it. We understand. My Pueblo people give names to newborns on the 4th day after the birth. The paternal grandmother gives the newborn baby a name, or a family member. Same way with the youngs boys going through certain life rituals, the selected Godfather will give him a name as well. In our lifetime, we have at least two to three Spirit names given to us by different people in our lives. Those people don't have to be just the One person who can do that, it's people who are grandparents, aunts and uncles, even siblings. You have already posted your thoughts on these concerns just awhile ago, so now just free your own mind and heart of all these negative comments people are bringing to your attention. Because I feel that they just want to bring you down, drag you to their level. Do not let that happen, be happy with what you have created and the positive things you have done with your life. As for Young Casper, let him know that maybe he should start his own content opposite of the stereotype of Native people. Meaning he can upload his own content about what natives think about whites. That would be very good too, I feel it would give another perspective on what others do not see or think about. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. But for now be safe, take care and today is a new day. Be happy, tomorrow is not guaranteed(for anyone)🙂🌺❤️🙏

I really enjoy your videos and humour. As a Scottish person I understand the issue of stereotypes and Scots often joke about them and play up to them sometimes. I respect my own culture and languages but also joke about them. We don't wear kilts, paint ourselves blue or eat haggis every day, but they have their place (well, not the blue - that's just Mel Gibson). So your cultural references make sense, as does your humour and for me the respect is also clear. 'Lang may yer lum reek'. *

@Eagle Blackbird: I was going to post something similar. As Scots, we are Indigenous too. By golly are we stereotyped. If you could see the 'Hello Jimmy' bunnets that tourists wear in Edinburgh, you'd pass out, they're so awful. But we are playful with it, like you. It's good to send up the stereotyping, as you are doing.
As an Indigene whose lands came under pressure and whose customs were diverted, I love your content. Humour is a fantastic way to build a bridge to a dark past and to heal. Glaswegians have been doing that since time immemorial - see Billy Connelly.
I don't know if you know @Sooshi Mango, but they are Italian - Australians who also play with the stereotypes, to fabulous effect. They are elevating a group which was the backbone of Australia at one time but which was not respected in their day.
I'm mentioning these other comic producers to give you heart. You are being given a hard time unnecessarily. Young Casper possibly does only have a limited life span, but he has been a great creation to show off the Romantisising of a culture, which Scots get as well. What we call the Brigadoon effect.
You are very gracious and humble to your critics and it's probably wise to hear what they have to say. But as a Grand Auntie who couldn't possibly be snagged, I think that you should keep going. You bring light-heartedness and shine a light on your beautiful culture. Aho and och aye.

I am half Crow Creek Sioux, and i love your videos! They are really funny and i can see that Casper very much appreciates our culture. It's a shame that people can't see the humor in it. But i also understand that these things can spread misinformation because many people don't understand that this is satire. Keep up your content, this is a wonderful video. Humor is how we heal!! Big hugs!

I’m so sorry that you are hurting! Don’t give up! PUCK them all. You can’t please all the people all the time! In any realm! AND never let anyone say or pressure you into who and whom you can be friends with! Embrace the differences! Don’t ignore them!!!
    ❤️✌️🇨🇦😊❤️
PS: I haven’t seen anything about Casper aside from your content. I don’t understand. ❤

As a Kwakiutl woman who was raised half in the culture and half in the city, i can say i love watching your videos❤ They give me a laugh AND they do address some of the stereotypes that are out there..in a funny way. There us always going to be someone who doesnt like what you are doing...from WITIN our communities or OUT...dont let their voices guide you. Listen to your heart. I was taught "if you can do it around your granny, than its okay" and MY granny gets a kick out of your videos😂 Let the haters hate and keep spreading joy♥️🇨🇦 gilakas'la

I love both you and Casper. I honestly see nothing wrong with your content. My mother is full blooded Blackfoot (Siksika). Their humor is off the wall. Same with my dad who is black. He had the craziest black jokes and it’s all fun.

I think its wonderful what both of you have done!! Ironically.....the entire indian community is based on peace and harmony. We would do good to remember that! WALK IN BEAUTY. To the ppl who are offended.....maybe work on your own life and stop being chronically offended. Life is too short ❤

I've just watched all of Young Casper's videos, and the only thing I can see that he's done "wrong" is to use the hashtag #indigenous. Because if a person isn't already familiar with the character he plays in your videos, it could look mocking rather than respectful, since there's nothing on his channel to tie him to you.
But honestly, you shouldn't need to make a 12 minute apology video because of something your White friend did. The point is simply that his character only works as a counterpoint to your "Deadly Indigenous" guy. The finding a stick video is genuinely funny.
I would love it if you took your great sense of humour and made some more educational videos about your culture. Not just "Bepsi" and "snagging aunties", but all kinds of things about your nation and the other First Nations. I don't know what, I'm British.

I don't know why anyone would criticize your content. Your videos are humorous and effective at point out what is wrong with stereotypes. People these days have lost the ability to laugh at themselves. They take themselves too seriously. Even the creator has a sense of humor. Look at the platypus. Ease up, people. Stop being keyboard warriors. Stop being offended on behalf of others. Let them decide for themselves. Eagle Blackbird, you just keep doing you. You are fine the way you are.

I'm so sorry you had to "learn" from this. I understand some of it because my grandmother didn't have a sense of humor concerning our people and their ways. Because of what they went thru, trail of tears, beaten to forget native tongues and ways. But what about the comedians that are black, spanish, they tell jokes about their people and we all laugh. You can laugh at jokes but respect the people. I thought you were doing that. I'm afraid we will continue to lose our freedom of speech as it seems we are, no more comedians, no more movies, no singing, no smiles, no laughter. 😢

Love your content, I am non-native and understood what you were doing from the beginning. As humans, we need to realize how ridiculous we can be. I truly want all of us to love one another and learn from each other. Thank you for explaining. I will continue to support you and all humans. Unfortunately, things in our collective past have not been right here in America. It is not the fault of today's everyday non-indigonous people. But we are responsible to learn and respect and support.
